The Czech Society of Soil Science – past and present
The Czech Society of Soil Science was founded on 23rd November 1994 in Brno,
at the meeting of the Commission for Soil Science under the Czech Academy of Agricultural Science.
The CSSS professes the tradition and results of Czech soil science, which attained considerable renown,
even on an international scale, as early as the turn of the 20th century. To this day,
specialist literature includes the names of Prof. J. Kopecký, Dr. J. Spirhanzl,
Prof. V. Novák and others, whose work has been followed by numerous prominent soil scientists
in their research and practical application of knowledge. The CSSS also follows on
from the longstanding activity of the Czechoslovak Academy of Agriculture
(established in 1924 to support research work and to popularize scientific knowledge and its application),
and of its successor – the contemporary Czech Academy of Agricultural Sciences, especially its Soil Science Department,
whose activities the CSSS supplements and extends.
After 20 years of activity the CSSS now incorporates more than 120 experts from research institutions, universities and businesses, covering individual soil-related specialist topics. The CSSS focuses mainly on:
An outstanding example of CSSS activities can be seen in its “Soil Science Days” - an annual national conference which is held alternately in the Czech Republic and Slovakia by the CSSS and Societas pedologica slovaca (Slovak Society of Soil Science) respectively. The conference provides an opportunity to meet, exchange knowledge and take stock.
The Czech Society of Soil Science is a member of the International Union of Soil Sciences (IUSS), the European confederation of Soil Science Societies (ECSSS) and the Council of Scientific Societies of the Czech Republic. The CSSS has been the organiser or co-organiser, for example, of a joint CSSS and SSSA conference in 2001 (Prague), Pedometrics 2011 (Třešť), Eurosoil 2008 (Vienna) and Dan Yaalon Symposia 2015 (Vienna).
